Ceiling Repair

In addition to repairs we do complete ceiling replacements and full ceiling installations for both new or old properties. Read on to learn even more about many of our ceiling services (or call to talk to an expert).

Have you ever left a friend's house and thought to yourself, they had such nice ceilings? Probably not. That's likely because, when ceilings are in good shape, they're not noticed. That's how it is supposed to be. On the other hand, have you ever visited a friend or family member and immediately noticed a patch of dusty cobwebs, or worse yet - a discolored water stain from a leak that came through the attic or roof? Something they are well aware of and haven't made the time to search for a drywall contractor near me, and are hoping that you won't notice. Send them our number. Seriously, we will spring into action faster than you can find the appropriate DIY video on YouTube.

Some paints will claim that they can kill mold or prevent it from forming, but paint is only applied to the visible portion of a ceiling. If there is moisture on the opposite side, like in an attic or exterior wall, mold could continue to form in an area that is largely out of sight. This process of painting over a bad stain, water spot, or mold growth is sort of a band-aid that could eventually become a much bigger expense. By calling Tampa Drywall Specialists, we can take the complete and thorough action of cutting out the whole problem, not just painting over it and hoping it won't show through or develop mold. If mold is allowed to form, you will be looking at more expensive repairs than minor patchwork. Rafters and wooden framing can be warped or damaged by wet, untreated panels and create expensive headaches for your home down the road. We can determine exactly how far the moisture may have spread and ensure that all effected portions or the drywall are removed and replaced with dry, high quality product. We'll use our expertise to patch the drywall hole and after finishing, paint, or texture matching, the result will be a seamless ceiling.

Ceiling Damage Causes

The Tampa Drywall Specialists have extensive experience repairing all types of ceiling issues, but certain types of damage are more common than others. Here are some of the most common ceiling repairs we address.

Leaks:

Ceiling damages most commonly occur as a result of stains, holes, or warping. We carefully evaluate the area to determine the best method of repair after we have fixed the initial issue and mitigated the immediate damage.

Badly-Seamed Drywalls:

As your ceiling settles, drywall seams on the ceiling can slowly become visible. We can sand down your ceiling seams, take off the old tape, apply reinforced tape, sealing the seams perfectly.

Accidental Damage:

Occasionally, ceiling damage occurs by mistake, such as when an HVAC technician slip-ups in the attic. Having an accident like this is more common than you might think!

Problem Drywall:

The term "problem drywall" refers to drywall that was installed between 2001 and 2009 and came into contact with tarnished copper electrical wire. The US now requires drywall to be tested for volatile sulfur before installation because this drywall increases corrosion of wiring and pipes.

Drywall Cracks:

A crack in drywall may seem insignificant at first, but it can quickly become a major problem. Without repair, cracks in the drywall and the foundation of the house can both be damaged. Check the ceiling for cracks. Regular roof inspections can prevent these cracks from developing due to excess moisture. Cracked drywall can also be the result of improperly installed drywall or house settlement. As part of the repair, we inspect the surrounding drywall for signs that it has been properly secured to ensure the cracks do not recur.

Rigid Drywall Joints

It is natural for wood framing to expand and contract, which causes tight drywall joints to crack. It is therefore recommended to leave 1/4" space between drywall sheets.

Foundational problems can also lead to damaged drywall so it is crucial to have it checked regularly. Small shifts might be unnoticeable but larger movement in your home or building's foundation can lead to lots of cracks or worse. Detecting a problem with your drywall ceiling? • What drywall is best for ceilings?

ceiling in new home after texture, before paint

While every project should be examined for its particular nuances, the favorite board to be used for ceiling installations in new home construction is 5/8" drywall.

5/8" drywall is more rigid and therefore less suseptible to sagging when hung from a ceiling. Especially if your joists are farther apart than 16", the 5/8 board will hold its shape better over time. Remember that texture on your ceiling can also add weight, making rigidity even more important in those cases.

1/2" is the best alternative (and used very often for wals) but the heavier 5/8" can help with sound proofing because it is thicker if noise is a concern. If your budget allows for it, using the thicker board on new construction provides a better overall finished product. 1/2" drywall board is less expensive and will be your next best option.

Understanding if the ceiling is a firewall is crucial too because 5/8" Type X drywall may be required in those places. This applies more commonly to multi-unit dwellings like apartments and condos, than to single family homes.

There are always exceptions, for instance, when dealing with small repairs or minor renovations, it's common to match the thickness of the drywall currently in place.

  • What can be done about wet drywall ceilings?

If left untreated, water damage can ruin the drywall, causing it to become soft, weak, and prone to mold growth. Water exposure directly affects drywall damage. As long as it doesn't get too wet, you might be able to save it. Get a fan as close as possible to help circulate the air and speed up the drying process or call a water damage remidiation company as soon as you are able to.

You want to make sure your leak or source of water is totally fixed before we begin our repairs otherwise the same result is likely. Once the water source has been patched or eliminated, we'll check all surrounding areas and replace as much soggy drywall as needed so that there is no chance of the moisture spreading. This may require whole panels or a large patch, but regardless of how much it is, rest assured when we finish the job, it will look like one complete ceiling or wall again.

  • Are there any other options besides drywall ceilings?

As a matter of fact, there are. Our team can also install acoustical ceilings in Tampa. Also known as drop ceilings, we are able to build these simple yet intricate grid systems into commercial spaces like office buildings, schools, churches, hospitals, waiting rooms, bathrooms, etc. We have a whole page dedicated to the acoustic ceiling tiles where you can read about this very common feature used in Florida and throughout the US. We'd love to answer any questions you have about it or begin working on an estimate to get one set up in your building.
